STPI to generate 15000 jobs in the BPO sector in North East India
By MYBRANDBOOK
Under the flagship ‘Digital India’ program, North East BPO Promotion Scheme (NEBPS) was launched to achieve much-needed inclusion of North-eastern states in the IT/ITES growth story. Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), an organization under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India is aiming to create around 15,000 direct jobs through this scheme. A budget of ₹50 Crore has been allocated to incentivize the establishment of 5000 seats in respect of BPO/ITES operations in the region.
This scheme aims at creating an ecosystem in the North East that will provide much-needed impetus towards development in the region. It would provide a platform to the youth of the northeast and curtail the migration from the region. Further, the scheme would facilitate investment in the states and attract industry players to explore the opportunities in the area.
Dr. Omkar Rai, Director General, Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) said, “Through this scheme, the government strives to ignite a developmental spark in the region and make it a preferred destination for all the sectors including ITES/BPO segment. The ecosystem created by this scheme would help in bringing the region into the mainstream. Investors must look forward to this as an opportunity to explore an unexplored market and tap an untapped section of human resource.”
The scheme provides financial assistance of up to 50% of the total expenditure (Capital / Operational) incurred on permissible items, with an upper ceiling of Rs. 1 lakh per BPO/ITES seat. Further, special incentives shall also be provided to units that employ women and specially-abled persons, generate employment beyond the target and for partnership with local entrepreneurs.
As of today, over 16 companies have received approval to set up BPO/ITES operations under North East BPO Promotion Scheme (NEBPS) for 21 units and 1675 seats, out of which Assam has the maximum share of 650 seats, followed by 400 in Nagaland, 350 seats in Manipur, 150 in Meghalaya, 75 in Tripura and 50 in Arunachal Pradesh. Some of these units are successfully delivering to international clients in the US and the UK.
Over a period, Indian BPO/ITES have grown from strength to strength, witnessing high levels of activity – both onshore as well as offshore, however, in recent years the growth has tapered for the reasons which once blossomed this industry in India.
With proper support, north-eastern states can provide the unbeatable combined value proposition of productivity, quality, and cost that and will give BPO/ITES companies the competitive edge. Further, the financial support from the Government through this scheme has made the north-east a prospective business destination.
This scheme is already showing successful strides through providing employment opportunity for the youth and enabling them to earn a decent livelihood in their own vicinity and thus, help them stay with their families.
