Jio Platforms and NICSI to offer cloud services to government entities
By MYBRANDBOOK
In a collaborative initiative, the National Informatics Centre Services Inc. (NICSI) has teamed up with Jio Platforms Limited (JPL) to introduce the National Government Cloud (NGC), a flexible, pay-per-use cloud service aimed at advancing government digital projects. This new cloud service will operate through NICSI's data centres, with both capital and operational expenses shared between the two partners.
According to reports quoting NICSI’s Managing Director, RK Mishra, NICSI will contribute data centre space and non-IT infrastructure, while both organizations will share investment costs and energy expenses. Under this partnership, Jio Platforms will manage the NGC services for a period of seven years, while NICSI and the National Informatics Centre (NIC) will maintain oversight and governance.
Mishra, as per reports, also noted that only 20% of the cloud's current capacity is in use, with additional resources ready for expansion when demand reaches around 70%. A customized self-service portal has been introduced, allowing government departments to easily manage cloud resources, monitor usage, and control costs, streamlining governance and support for various departments’ digital needs.
This development follows Jio's Rs 350 crore agreement with NICSI signed last year to oversee its cloud services. Under this contract, Jio manages NICSI’s cloud operations at National Data Centers in Bhubaneshwar, Hyderabad, Delhi, and Pune. Alongside managing NICSI's cloud services and the National Government Cloud (NGC), the contract also mandates Jio to create a cloud application marketplace.
To keep services affordable, the partnership includes a revenue-sharing arrangement that offers up to 20% discounts on long-term contracts. This collaboration is expected to strengthen the national cloud infrastructure, improve efficiency, and foster innovation across government digital services.
As part of the Meghraj 2.0 initiative in 2023, the National Informatics Centre issued requests for proposals to Indian cloud providers to expand the NIC cloud framework and support multi-cloud solutions. Jio Platforms was selected to provide secure, scalable cloud services to NICSI, enabling numerous government departments and agencies to benefit from enhanced cloud resources.
