Xiaomi prepares to enter laptop market, eyeing to tap on work-from-home demand
By MYBRANDBOOK
The Chinese smartphone maker, Xiaomi is all set to foray into laptop space which is dominated by companies like HP, Dell and Lenovo, who are all trying to tap the current surge in demand as India is continuing to work from home.
As per news source, Raghu Reddy, Chief Business Officer at Xiaomi India said that the company will not follow similar strategy of smartphone model of affordability or pricing the laptops at the entry-level. It will target users like content creators, gamers, and students. He added that Xiaomi would not flood the market with too many models.
"We were planning to launch it before the big festive season, before Diwali. But given the situation in industry and people working from home and students looking for devices for online classes, short-term demand might be higher than the past," said Reddy.
He said that around six to seven million laptops are sold annually with equal demand coming from consumer and commercial users. "It has been a stagnant category...you see some increase due to big commercial deals from state governments...however, there are two segments that are growing -- Thin & Light and Gaming."
He further said that the thin and light weight laptop segment grew 70-80% last year and contributed around 30% towards the overall market, whereas gaming is still a niche but growing market with a 5% share.
"We always give ourselves a year to build up the category. As a brand, we ensure that customers have post-sales experience as well and once we start getting results, we will scale it," Reddy said.
The company will also look at local manufacturing for laptops after reaching a certain level of monthly sales. "A combination of us making the foothold and manufacturing ecosystem is required," he added.
