The present work from home model removed borders and barriers for IT companies, feels Wipro Chairman Rishad Premji

The Chairman of Wipro, Rishad Premji has said that the present work from home culture has removed borders and barriers for IT companies, amidst rising protectionism in its main markets like the US. He also said that Wipro will increase local hiring in the US.
"This model itself lends to a new way of thinking, right? Because does it really matter if I'm sitting in New Jersey or if I'm sitting in Bengaluru if I'm working from home. So this new way of working itself is providing some level of de-risking. Two is we are fundamentally taking up the issue that mobility of talent and mobility of services is an important conversation in trade. And so we actively have conversations with the government, to provide, to take this up. The last thing which is very very critical has been localizing, you know, three years ago, we were maybe 45% local in the US, whereas today it is 70% local in the US right. We will be more local in the US, the challenge is the availability of talent. We are now hiring from campuses on a much more systematic basis overseas in the US and UK. Like we hire on scale in India," Premji said in a conversation with Chiratae Ventures founder and Chairman Sudhir Sethi, as part of VC fund's visionary talk series.
He also added that the current work from home model has in a way 'delisted borders and barriers.' President Trump had issued a proclamation in June suspending work visas across categories such as H-1B, L and J categories till the end of the year.
In August, The US State Department has eased the suspension and release a list of exemptions that will allow H-1B visa holders to travel to the United States if they meet a set of criteria.
H-1B visa is one of the most widely used employment visas by US-bound Indian techies. A majority of these visas are used by global tech majors such as Google and Microsoft as well as Indian IT companies such as TCS, Infosys and Wipro to deploy engineers from India to the US.
Indian companies have been stepping up local hiring in recent years to mitigate the risks around visa curbs and protectionism.
