Centre allocates Rs 19,041-crore more for BharatNet last leg
By MYBRANDBOOK
Government has announced , it has allotted a further Rs 19.041-crore in direction of the enlargement and upgradation of BharatNet, a nationwide initiative to attach 6 lakh villages, 1,56,223 blocks have been coated by May 31, with optic fibre-based community for the supply of Internet companies, will become a part of Digital India program.
The total outlay for the project now stands at ₹61,109 crores. This includes the already-approved amount of ₹42,068 crores in 2017, along with the recent addition. The extra outlay might be used to attach the stability. The finance ministry’s extra funding is in step with Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s announcement on August 15, 2020, to attach each inhabited village in 1000 days.
Peeyush Vaish, Partner & Telecom Sector Leader, Deloitte India said, “the need for rural internet penetration across the hinterland cannot be pressed more in these times to provide medical, agriculture, education and Governance services”. He added that the outlay will further connect the remaining untapped 40% gram-panchayats.
More importantly, the government has already extended the deadline to actually finish the project multiple times. What’s more, the government will, most likely, extend the current deadline of August 2021.
However, the government has shown seriousness for the project. Earlier this year, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on IT had pulled up the DoT for the delays. It had also slammed the telcos working on the project, especially RailTel and BSNL, the former of which the Standing Committee removed from the project altogether.
