WhatsApp will now let users encrypt their chat backups in the cloud
By MYBRANDBOOK
WhatsApp is allowing users to encrypt their backed-up chats, making them unreadable without access to a password or 64-digit encryption key.
With this update, if someone backs up their chat history with end-to-end encryption, it will be accessible only to the user, and no one, including WhatsApp or even the backup service provider, will be able to unlock their end-to-end encryption key or their end-to-end encrypted backup.
It has been widely reported that law enforcement agencies across the globe have been able to access the private communications between suspect individuals on WhatsApp as the users have had no means to protect the backup of chats stored in the cloud despite having end-to-end encryption on the chats.
WhatsApp started the trial of the feature with a small group of users last month. The company developed a system to enable WhatsApp users on Android and iOS to lock their chat backups with encryption keys. It will offer users two ways to encrypt their cloud backups. The feature is optional, the company said.
"Prior to the introduction of end-to-end encrypted backups, backups stored on Apple iCloud and Google Drive were not protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption. Now we are offering the ability to secure your backups with end-to-end encryption before they are uploaded to these cloud services," WhatsApp said earlier in a whitepaper explaining the technology behind this new update.
