Lockheed Martin and Verizon to jointly develop 5G tech for US Military

Verizon and Lockheed Martin have signed an agreement to collaborate on 5G technologies that will provide ultra-secure, reliable connections for U.S. Department of Defense systems, bringing together high-tech platforms into a cohesive network spanning air, land, sea, space and cyber domains.
The agreement between Lockheed Martin and Verizon comes after the two companies linked a commercial 5G mobile network with a military communications network used by fighter jets to send and receive targeting coordinates.
The partnership “will help enable the creation of new and innovative products and technologies, helping DoD leaders achieve the goals laid out in their 5G strategy,” Verizon Chief Technology Officer Kyle Malady said in a statement.
The partners recently conducted a joint demonstration of a Verizon private 5G network at Lockheed’s 5G test range in Colorado. Verizon said the network was connected to a Lockheed open mission system processor running mission applications at a test center in Texas.
The initial tests showed interoperability between Lockheed’s open tactical gateway solutions and Verison’s on-site 5G network technology. Verizon's infrastructure and Lockheed’s tactical gateway technologies will help to address future requirements for tactical operations.
