5G technologies enable the potential for billions of connected network devices: Lt. Gen. Rajesh Pant
By MYBRANDBOOK
According to Lt. Gen Rajesh Pant, Coordinator, National Cyber Security, t he advent of 5G technology will require uniform focus on security throughout the network.
In an event Pant said, 5G will have a very complex software defined network where so many computing and switching functions previously handled centrally have moved to the edge of the network which has created new security challenges necessitating a focus on security throughout the network.
Underlying the importance of security in a network, Pant said if network devices were compromised through a network layer exploit, malicious things could obtain unauthorized access to the 5G network, potentially disrupting operations and enabling the interception, manipulation, and destruction of critical data.
As per Pant, 5G technologies also enable the potential for billions of connected network devices supporting a wealth of new capabilities and innovations. These devices and infrastructure capabilities such as cellular towers, small cells and mobile devices introduced the opportunity for malicious things to expose vulnerabilities.
Last year, the government of India took an initiative to implement the National Security Directive on the telecom sector basically to counter the security threats of 5G. Network security was always at the center stage, whether it was 1G or whether it was 4G.In the 5th generation of mobile technology, the network has moved away from centralized hardware based switching to a distributed software defined digital routing. The distinction between core and edge has blurred.
On Open RAN (radio access network), India supports the Open RAN initiative and desires to work with likeminded countries to see this initiative gain momentum and spread like fire in the oligopolistic 5G market. Studies have shown the Radio access networks accounts for nearly 65-70% of the cost of mobile networks.
