Hackers target authentication firm Okta

Okta Inc, whose authentication services are used by companies including Fedex Corp and Moody's Corp to provide access to their networks, has been hit by hackers affecting some of its customers.
The breach could have major consequences because thousands of companies rely on San Francisco-based Okta to manage access to their networks and applications.
Okta’s Chief Security Officer David Bradbury acknowledged that support engineers were able to help reset passwords and the company was in the process of identifying and contacting the customers that may have been impacted.
In a series of blog posts, Bradbury said that around 2.5 percent of the company’s more than 15,000 customers “have potentially been impacted” and had their data possibly “viewed or acted upon.”
Okta's authentication services are used by thousands of reputed organisations worldwide and any breach could have major ramifications for the companies, universities, and government agencies that depend upon San Francisco-based Okta to authenticate user access to internal systems.
It competes with the likes of Microsoft Corp, PingID, Duo, SecureAuth and IBM to provide identity services such as single sign-on and multifactor authentication used to help users securely access online applications and websites.
