Facebook to soon shut down its Neighborhood app

Facebook is going to shut down its hyperlocal feature called Neighborhoods on October 1. Meta has not given a clear reason for this decision, but the company’s recent focus on cutting costs could be a reason.

Facebooks Neighborhoods platform was capable of connecting people with their neighbours, discovering new places in their area and also being part of the local community. When people created Neighborhoods profile, they chose to add interests, favourite places and a bio so people can get to know them within the Neighborhoods Directory.

A spokesperson from the company said, “When we launched Neighborhoods, our mission was to bring local communities closer together, and we’ve learned the best way to do this is through groups. This was basically viewed as a digital directory, allowing others to view your profile and vice versa. Just like every other social media platform these days, Facebook had set up guidelines around which Neighborhoods would work.”

“We built Neighborhoods to be safe and inclusive, with Neighborhoods Guidelines to help keep interactions among neighbors relevant and kind. Neighborhoods have moderators who use these Guidelines to review posts and comments in the Neighborhoods feed,” it added.
