Apple may have reduced M2 chip production
By MYBRANDBOOK
Apple has reportedly stopped the production of its M2 series chips that power the new MacBook Pro, Mac mini models and the latest MacBook Air, in the beginning of 2023. The tech giant decided to halt production in January after the global demand for MacBooks took a hit amid a severe PC market downturn. Though its production has now resumed, they were "only half the level of the previous year”.
The report adds, “Taiwan's TSMC did not send 5 nano-process M2 chip wafer workpieces to the outsourced semiconductor package test (OSAT) in January and February, according to the OSAT industry on the 3rd. It is believed that it was because Apple requested to stop production as demand for MacBooks dwindled.”
In February, Apple mentioned that its revenue has reduced by 5% in the first quarter (YoY). The decline has been steeper than expected as Apple faced supply issues with iPhones. The company also saw a reduction in the revenue of Macs and wearables as well.
However, the new M2-powered iPad models helped to push the revenue of the tablets to go up by 30%. Mac revenue from Q1 2022 $10.9 billion while the same for Q1 2023 went down to $7.7 billion.
