Apple may pay up $65 as compensation to iPhone users
By MYBRANDBOOK
Apple agreed to pay up to $500 million to resolve a class-action lawsuit in 2020. As per the lawsuit, the company secretly slowed down the performance of certain iPhone models to address problems with batteries and processors.
According to reports, a judge has now cleared the way for payments in the lawsuit with owners of some older iPhone models who accused Apple are expected to receive about $65 each.
Under the agreement, Apple was to provide the claims administrator with the names and contact of everyone owning or leasing an eligible iPhone. Meanwhile, the claims deadline was October 6, 2020.
Recently, two iPhone owners who objected to the settlement lost their appeal in a US court. These users appealed to remove the final obstacle to the deal. The lawyer who represented iPhone customers in the case, Tyson Redenbarger, said that about 3 million claims have already been received. The latest estimate puts the compensation at about $65 per user.
Apple has however denied the charges and has agreed to pay $310 million out of the $500 million.
Redenbarger noted that the exact amount of compensation depends on the number of claim approvals, as some of them are still under assessment.
The eligible phones include iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, and SE running operating systems iOS 10.2.1 or later before December 21, 2017. This list also includes iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models running iOS 11.2 or later before the mentioned date.
