Patent lawsuit between Caltech, Apple and Broadcom ends with a settlement
By MYBRANDBOOK
The billion-dollar patent dispute between the California Institute of Technology, Apple and Broadcom over Wi-Fi chips has come to an end with a settlement. Caltech filed a court document stating that it is dismissing the case with prejudice, which means it cannot be filed again. In 2016, Caltech filed a lawsuit against Apple and Broadcom, alleging infringement of Wi-Fi patents.
The patents covered encoding and decoding circuitry, which aimed to improve data transmission and performance. The suit targeted Apple's iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch for using Caltech's technology. Broadcom is a major supplier to Apple and has signed a $15 billion deal to provide chips for upcoming products, including iPhones.
Apple countersued, while trying to invalidate the patents, but was unsuccessful. In 2020, a jury ruled in favour of Caltech, stating that Apple and Broadcom had infringed on the patents, as a result of which, Apple was ordered to pay $838 million. Broadcom on the other hand was directed to pay $270 million.
Later Apple appealed, and a federal appeals court overturned the decision, calling the award "legally unsupportable." The jury then ordered a new trial but also upheld the original jury's findings that both Apple and Broadcom had infringed on two patents owned by Caltech.
The new trial was scheduled for June but has been postponed indefinitely. Last August, both parties informed the court that they had potentially settled, but no further details were provided.
Samsung, too, was sued by Caltech for violating its WiFI technology patent rights. However, the two parties settled the matter earlier this year. Caltech has also sued Microsoft, Dell, and HP separately over the same patents, and those cases are still pending.
