Amazon using AI-powered robots to reduce delivery time
By MYBRANDBOOK
Amazon has recently started using a new robotics system called Sequoia, in its warehouses. This AI-powered technology is designed to increase the efficiency of their delivery times, ensure safety, and improve general operations. This system can potentially improve the speed of finding and storing products by up to 75%, and order fulfilment by up to 25%.
Sequoia has already been implemented in one of Amazon's warehouses located in Houston. The system involves vehicles transporting totes of products to a sorting machine. It uses robotic arms and computer vision to identify the inventory before sending it to employees for delivery. The process provides workers with items at waist level, which eliminates the need to reach for things on high shelves, making it safer for the workers.
Sequoia follows Sparrow, an AI-powered robotic arm that was introduced in 2022 and is designed for warehouse use. Sparrow can identify and move the products that remain after the Sequoia step, making the entire process more efficient.
The system is designed with both speed and safety in mind, with the aim of reducing workplace injuries. Humans are intended to work alongside the new machines for optimal results.
Amazon says that the company is constantly looking for ways to improve safety in its warehouses. The main goal is to eliminate mundane tasks, allowing the robots to work alongside human staff. Both the robots and humans need each other to work efficiently and ensure that the warehouse operations run smoothly.
In 2022, Amazon announced a $1 billion fund dedicated to innovation in logistics and supply chain. During the same year, the company introduced Sparrow - a robot that can effortlessly pick up various objects, just like humans.
