Apple to add data transfer and peripheral authentication features to MagSafe

Apple has been investigating methods to enhance its MagSafe charging technology with new capabilities, such as wireless data transfer and the ability to identify and authenticate connected peripherals. According to a recent patent from Apple, an iPhone may first detect a nearby MagSafe attachment before searching for any potential data on it. Identification may be part of this data, and MagSafe can be used as a key in such a system.

A granted patent application titled ‘Accessory Devices That Communicate With Electronic Devices’ sheds light on Apple's strategy. The company acknowledges issues such as accessory-induced heat traps, causing performance issues in connected devices. The proposed solution involves incorporating a magnetic field sensor in electronic devices, like iPhones, to detect external magnetic fields and differentiate between MagSafe accessories.

Apple envisions a second level of recognition where MagSafe accessories can transfer data through the system. This innovation could empower MagSafe accessories to communicate their tolerances to iOS, potentially enabling them to function as keys for enhanced functionality.
