Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has gifted the city of Mumbai by inaugurating the city’s landmark infrastructure project — the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Aarey stretch of Mumbai Metro Line 3. The Mumbai Metro 3 or the Aqua Line is a 33.5 km long underground metro line but only a part of it -- 12.44-km stretch-- is inaugurated to begin with. It is also called the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz line.

The first phase of Mumbai Metro’s Aqua Line, with Metropolis metro trainsets and signalling solutions are supplied by Alstom India. Alstom’s engagement with Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) for the Aqua Line includes manufacturing of 31 lightweight, fully furnished modern metro trains of 8 cars each, which is one of the biggest rolling stock contracts in the urban sector for the company in India.

As the city gears up to commute on this new metro route, leading telecom operator Vi announced the successful completion of its network deployment across the entire underground stretch. With this, Vi customers traveling on underground route will experience uninterrupted connectivity across the entire 12.44 kilometer stretch.

Commenting on this initiative, Shailendra Singh, Operations Director, Vodafone Idea, said, "The inauguration of Aarey to BKC underground Metro corridor is a long-cherished dream for the people of Mumbai. As the city’s leading telecom operator, we are delighted to share that our network deployment across this metro route will offer an uninterrupted and seamless experience to our customers.”

Speaking on the occasion, Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India said, “The Alstom built full stack mobility solutions for the Mumbai Aqua Line is packed with some of the most sophisticated engineering and technology solutions for Mumbai’s first underground metro. With our 100% made-in-India driverless trains, we are demonstrating that innovation and efficiency can go hand-in-hand. Our longstanding partnership with MMRCL has enabled us to deliver a world-class metro experience that promises to significantly ease the daily commute for millions of Mumbaikars.”

Vi has set-up its network infrastructure across all 10 stations on the route - Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Vidya Nagari, Santacruz, Domestic Airport, Sahar Road, International Airport, Marol Naka, MIDC, SEEPZ and Aarey Colony. To ensure seamless network connectivity for its customers, Vi has deployed in-building solutions (IBS) inside the underground metro tunnel.

Under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the trains have been designed and developed at Alstom’s engineering centre in Bangalore, Karnataka and are currently being manufactured at its state-of-the-art rolling stock manufacturing unit at Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. So far, 24 trainsets have been delivered to MMRCL.
