Google’s new feature can lock stolen Android smartphone and protect personal data
By MYBRANDBOOK
Google just made your Android smartphone a lot more resilient with the new “theft detection lock” feature that ensures the personal data is safe and that the phone is of no use to the thief.
The new feature, currently rolling out to Android smartphone users, was spotted on the recently introduced Xiaomi 14T Pro. Google is rolling out three major components of theft-related features - theft detection lock, offline device lock, and remote lock. The features were released by the company in May.
Android reporter Mishaal Rahman first reported on the new additions after finding them on his Xiaomi 14T Pro phone.
The Theft Detection Lock utilizes AI to automatically lock the phone screen when it detects "theft-related movements," such as when the device is forcibly taken. Similarly, the Offline Device Lock secures the phone by locking the screen after it has been offline for a certain period.
As per a news report, the Remote Lock feature is the only one that is visible to most users currently and it helps users lock their phone using their phone number if they’re unable to log into their Find My Device account using their password.
The Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock is available on Android 10 and higher phone models while the Remote Lock feature is for phones starting from Android 5. While the features are still being rolled out gradually, users are advised to update their Google Play Services first.
