Data Leak: Star Health receives Rs 57 lakh ransom demand from hacker
By MYBRANDBOOK
Following its data breach that exposed sensitive customer information, including medical records and tax details, Star Health has now revealed that the hacker responsible for the leak demanded a $68,000 (nearly Rs 57.21 lakh) ransom in August. The threat actor demanded the ransom in an email addressed to its managing director and chief executive, the company noted.
The infamous breach was first reported in September, and has led to a reputational and business crisis for Star Health, whose shares have since plunged by 11%. The India's biggest health insurer launched internal investigations and has also taken legal action against Telegram and the hacker. The reports claim that the hacker’s website continues to share samples of Star Health customers' data.
According to reports, this statement comes after stock exchanges asked Star Health for clarification over another Reuters news which claimed that the company was investigating allegations about its chief security officer being involved in the data leak. Later on, the insurer announced that it had found no wrongdoing by the official, Amarjeet Khanuja. However, the internal investigation stays open, say reports.
The hacker, as per reports, exploited Telegram chatbots and a dedicated website to disseminate the stolen data and continues to share samples of customer information. In response to the breach, Star Health launched internal investigations and initiated legal action against Telegram and the hacker. The company is reportedly also collaborating with Indian cyber security authorities to address the situation.
Telegram has declined to share information about the hacker's accounts or permanently ban them from the platform, in spite of receiving multiple notices from the insurance company. The company has identified the hacker as "xenZen" in their latest statement. The Dubai-based messaging app earlier said that it removed the chatbots as soon as it was flagged to the platform.
