Bengaluru’s traffic woes addressed with a super-app in the making
By MYBRANDBOOK
Bengaluru commuters may soon find a simplified solution for real-time traffic updates and road safety reports as the city’s Traffic Police prepare to launch a comprehensive "super-app" called ASTraM (Actionable Intelligence for Sustainable Traffic Management). Expected to debut in the next two months, this app aims to serve as a single platform for accessing live traffic congestion alerts, reporting accidents, and even submitting images of violations—all without the need for multiple apps or social media.
The public version of ASTraM will expand on the current app used by Bengaluru's Traffic Police for internal monitoring. Designed to cover the entire city, it moves beyond the current simulation model that includes 21 major traffic corridors. The app will feature live traffic congestion alerts within a 5-kilometer radius and options for users to report accidents anonymously.
As per reports quoting Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), M. N. Anucheth, the super-app will integrate various services, such as the Public Eye platform, into one app. This integration aims to enhance efficiency, allowing traffic police and the public to access essential information and report road incidents with ease.
"A digital map will allow us to test projects, like road closures or new one-way routes, in simulations before implementing them, minimizing inconvenience to commuters,” JCP Anucheth explained.
Additionally, Bengaluru Traffic Police plans to partner with specialized agencies to create microsimulation models of individual vehicle movements within the city. Expected within the next three months, these models will allow authorities to monitor and respond to traffic at a street level for improved management.
The ASTraM super-app initiative is part of a broader plan to optimize Bengaluru’s traffic management system, which includes installing new signboards, solar-powered blinkers, body cameras, and enhanced road safety features. According to JCP Anucheth, all work orders are set to be finalized by the end of the month, with project completion expected by January.
