Xiaomi evaluating the possibility of manufacturing consumer electronics, durables in India
By MYBRANDBOOK
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is mulling over the possibility of manufacturing some of its other categories of consumer electronics and consumer durables offerings like wearables, air purifiers, water purifiers, smart LED lamps, security cameras, among others locally in India.
Xiaomi currently manufactures smartphones, smart LED TVs, power banks as well as some charging and USB cables in India.
While showcasing the Foxconn facility that makes smartphones for Xiaomi, Xiaomi India chief operating officer Muralikrishnan B said that there are a bunch of interesting things that Xiaomi is thinking of manufacturing here - consumer durables and electronics. “Evaluations are going on in multiple categories and at an appropriate time we should be able to make an announcement on that,” he said.
“Across categories `Make in India’ is something that we continue to work on and in every category we are committed to `Make in India’. As responsible corporate citizens we will try and make as much as possible in India… it is our way of giving back…,” the Xiaomi India COO said.
He further added that Xiaomi has starting exporting smartphones made in India to Bangladesh and Nepal in small quantities. In fact, nearly 99% of its smartphones sold in India are made in India, adding that its seven outsourced manufacturing facilities in India churn out one smartphone every three seconds and by value 65% of each smartphone is localised.
“If we get more government incentives, we plan to scale up export of ‘make in India’ phones,” Muralikrishnan said.
Foxconn has a dedicated 30-acre facility for Xiaomi phones at Sri City, where it employs over 15,000 people, nearly 87% of which are women from the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Odisha. Apart from that, Foxconn also has a facility at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu where it manufactures for Xiaomi.
