TCS may explore the possibilities of remote working model

The lockdown has forced IT employees to work from home. Since lockdown has been announced, over 80% of India's 40 lakh IT workers are working from home and delivering services to clients across the globe. India's leading IT services firm, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is exploring possibilities to continue the remote working model post-Covid-19.

In a post-earnings call, TCS's COO (Chief Operating Officer) N Ganapathy Subramanian said that the company needs only 25% of the workforce to be present in the office to ensure 100% productivity. He also highlighted that every employee need not be present at the office all time. The company seeks to deepen the remote working model till 2025.

The work from home could be seen as a new constant as it involves cost savings, convenience, and productivity gains. If WFH is implemented correctly, it can also help employees bring work-life balance. Companies can become more flexible to move their offices according to business needs.

Rajesh Gopinathan, TCS's CEO said, "We can get to a 25 /25 model by 2025 and, that is the way in which we (will) build out our future capacity and future infrastructure. It doesn’t really matter (whether it is) 25 or 50. The point is it will never be 100/100 (100% workforce at office for 100% of the times)."

Indian IT service firms have expanded their campuses across major cities in India including Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Noida, Vizag, and Chennai. The major expenditure of these campuses is real estate. India's software lobby body Nasscom also believes that Covid-19 will alter how companies look at employers and workplaces.
