Sahasra Semiconductors becomes the first Indian company to produce memory chips
By MYBRANDBOOK
Sahasra Semiconductors in Rajasthan has surpassed Micron to become the first Indian business to develop memory chips. The semiconductor assembly, testing, and packaging unit in Bhiwadi started production last month, and the first shipment of micro-SD cards has already been delivered. Sahasra intends to reach 30% capacity by year's end and, with government clearance and help, expand further in early 2024. Micron made a $825 million investment in a brand-new Gujarati factory.
Amrit Manwani, Sahasra Group Managing Director, said that the company achieved the distinction of being the first to sell "Made-in-India" micro-SD cards, and the products have received outstanding responses on e-commerce platforms, as cited in a news report.
The name Sahasra has been derived from the Sanskrit word for "thousand" to signify the turn of the millennium, was established by an IIT Kanpur graduate in 2000. The diverse operations of the company highlight its role in supporting various aspects of the electronics and technology manufacturing sector.
Sahasra CEO, Varun Manwani in an interview with a news source said that in the first phase the initial investment for the company is almost Rs 350 crore. Out of the Rs 350 crore investment, the company has already committed Rs 160 crore for plant and machinery. In the second phase, the investment will be around Rs 190 crore and will be spread over a period of two to three years.
In the second phase, the company will initiate advanced packaging of products, including internal memory chips, expanding its semiconductor production capabilities further.
The company has gained approval under two key government initiatives to support semiconductor manufacturing in India. These initiatives include the production-linked incentive (PLI) programme for components and subassemblies of white goods, as well as the scheme for the promotion of manufacturing of electronic components and semiconductors (SPECS).
Under SPECS, Sahasra is eligible to receive 25 percent of the capital expenditure for setting up or expanding its manufacturing facility, providing essential support for its semiconductor production endeavours.
