Centre issues a warning about fake social media advertisements
By MYBRANDBOOK
The Centre released alerts regarding a rise in cybercrimes, focusing on stock market-related fraud. These advertisements, which can be found on social networking sites, make use of deepfake technology. The SMS alerts advised being cautious while clicking on dubious links or communications. Citizens are asked to report any incidents of victimisation to Cybercrime.gov or the Chakshu complaint service.
The Indian government and even banks have been sending out warning letters to a large number of people in the country about the proliferation of cybercrimes. In this effort, the government is also participating by warning the public about fraudulent advertisements that have the potential to infect devices with malware and attempt to steal money.
Deepfakes have become a major concern for the law enforcement agencies, especially when AI tech is allowing bad actors to morph photos/videos and even voice into duping people. The government realises the need to warn people and the SMSs are reaching people through their mobile network in the last few days. “Never fall prey to greed. Stay safe from scammers,” the message adds.
People should always avoid opening messages or websites from messages via unknown sources. These steps are repeated by everyone but it is the best way to avoid falling prey to these scams. The messaging from the government talks about reporting the fraud right away on Sanchar Saathi website which offers the new Chakshu complaint service for cyber crimes, frauds and more. Victims can also report on the number 1930 or head over to the Cybercrime.gov portal and get their complaints addressed by the authorities.
