British Airways to pay a fine of £183m for data breach
By MYBRANDBOOK
For last year’s breach of its security systems, the UK based airline company, British Airways is facing a fine of £183million. As per news source, IAG, the owner of the British Airways is "surprised and disappointed" by the penalty from the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). As per ICO it was the biggest penalty it had ever issued. After the implementation of the EU Update to Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), it is the first to be made public.
After coming into force, the GDPR rule stipulates that firms must report a breach within 72 hours. British Airways took just one day to inform its customers about the cyberattack in September last Details from around 380,000 booking transactions had been stolen, including bank card numbers, expiry dates and cvv codes.
It didn’t take long to find out that these details were taken via malicious script designed to steal financial information by skimming British Airway’s payment page before it was submitted.
