Ukrainian govt websites hit by data wiping software and destructive malware amid the Russia tension

Several Ukrainian state websites, including the government and foreign ministry home pages, were inaccessible and cybersecurity researchers said unidentified attackers had also infected hundreds of computers with destructive malware amid escalating Russia-Ukraine tensions.
This comes after Ukraine's cybersecurity agency said it found warnings of a potential cyberattack on a hacking forum as tensions between Russia and the West are soaring over Ukraine, an ex-Soviet country and close ally of the United States and Europe.
A foreign ministry spokesman said, “As a result of a massive cyberattack, the websites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a number of other government agencies are temporarily down.” The education ministry wrote on Facebook that its website was down due to a "global (cyber) attack" that had taken place overnight.
Officials have long said they expect cyberattacks to precede and accompany any Russian military incursion, and analysts said the incidents hew to a nearly two-decade-old Russian playbook of wedding cyber operations with real-world aggression.
“Our specialists are already working on restoring the work of IT systems, and the cyber police opened an investigation,” the foreign ministry said.
Vikram Thakur, Technical Director at Symantec Threat Intelligence, said his outfit detected three organizations hit by the wiper malware Ukrainian government contractors in Latvia and Lithuania and a financial institution in Ukraine.
