Apple stops Debit and Credit Card Payments in India
By MYBRANDBOOK
Apple has stopped accepting payments for subscriptions via debit and credits in India, implying that customers will now need to add money to their Apple funds, similar to a prepaid card, which will deduct money from the account every month when the subscription renews.
Apple’s support page, which lists the available payment options for each country, shows UPI, netbanking, and Apple ID balance as the only three options to receive payments in India. The users, who have already added a card to their account as a payment method are also unable to make fresh payments through their Apple ID.
The decision was made as the new RBI mandate indicated that there were to be no more automatic recurring payments for the various services such as utility bills, phone recharge, DTH and OTT payments, meaning that no money would be deducted from the bank account without the customer’s manual approval.
The new iPhone or iPad users are required to create an Apple ID while setting up the device, and they are also required to provide bank details. Users are advised to get an Apple Balance account and link it with UPI to continue subscriptions.
In an email to users, Apple said: “Due to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulations, Apple Search Ads will soon no longer accept payments from credit cards issued by banks in India. Starting 1 June, all campaigns using a credit card issued from a bank in India will be placed on hold. To avoid a lapse in serving ads to your customers, you can use a credit card issued by a bank outside of India. You can update your payment method by going to the billing tab in your account settings.”
Other than Apple, several users are now facing difficulties in making recurring payments via cards on YouTube and Google Play. Last year, Netflix introduced UPI AutoPay support for recurring payments to avoid issues due to the mew auto-debit rules. Google has also been impacted by the new RBI mandate.
